Small (\(\pu{12 kDa}\)) protein forming part of the structure of major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I-encoded molecules.
Note: The presence of \(\upbeta_{2}\)-microglobulin in urine is a common indicator of renal tubular dysfunction.
