Systematic pretreatment (e.g., \(\rm{pH}\) change, filtration, or aeration) of a sample to obtain defined fractions that are subsequently tested for their toxicity. This fractionation is designed to separate out defined substances and thus to identify the agent(s) primarily responsible for lethal or sublethal toxicity of a complex mixture.
