syrup

Liquid preparation of high sugar concentration with or without medicinal and additional flavoring substances.
Notes:
  1. Syrup is a highly concentrated solution of sugar. Other polyols, such as glycerol or sorbitol, may be present to retard crystallization of sucrose or to increase the solubility of added ingredients.
  2. When the syrup contains a medicinal substance, it is termed "medicated syrup"; and the syrup is diluted since USP syrup is close to a saturated solution. Although syrup tends (due to its very high [approximately \(\pu{85\%}\)] sucrose content) to resist mold or bacterial contamination, syrup may contain antimicrobial agents to prevent bacterial and mold growth.
  3. It is often required to add a cosolvent or water to the medicated syrup in order to dissolve the drug.
