A transformation in which an atom or group $\ce{Y}$ connected to two other atoms or groups $\ce{X}$ and $\ce{Z}$ is lost from a molecule, leading to a product in which $\ce{X}$ is bonded to $\ce{Z}$, e.g.

The reverse of an extrusion is called insertion.
