Molecule belonging mainly to the immunoglobulins, integrin superfamily (e.g., LFA-1, ICAM-1) or selectins, expressed on the cell membrane of various cells including those of the immune system. Interaction of adhesion molecules with each other as receptor and corresponding ligand facilitates cooperation (cross-talk) of cells, signal transduction, and information transfer between cells.
