Diagnostic test in which antigens derived from the organism causing tuberculosis (Mycobacterium tuberculosis) are injected subcutaneously; individuals who have been exposed to the organism develop a delayed-type hypersensitivity (DTH) response at the injection site \(\pu{24}\) to \(\pu{48 h}\) later.
Note: Those who have been previously vaccinated with bacille Calmette–Guérin (BCG) also show a positive response.
