Sum of the interparticle volume of the column and intraparticle volume of the column: \(V_{\rm{t}} = V_{0} + V_{\rm{i}}\)
Note: In the definition of \(V_{\rm{t}}\) the extra-column volume of the system (\(V_{\rm{ext}}\)) is neglected. If it is not negligible, it must also be added: \[V_{\rm{t}} = V_{0} + V_{\rm{i}} + V_{\rm{ext}}\]
