Gene resulting from a chromosomal translocation (9;22) that fuses sequences from the BCR (breakpoint cluster region) gene with the ABL gene.
Notes:
- This translocation creates the Philadelphia chromosome, found in most human patients with chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML).
- The fusion protein encoded by BCR-ABL possesses unregulated tyrosine kinase activity.
- The term ABL derives from the Abelson murine leukemia virus, from which the gene was first isolated.
