Causative agent of acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS).
Notes:
  1. HIV is a retrovirus of the lentivirus family that selectively infects macrophages and CD4+ T cells, leading to their slow depletion, eventually resulting in immunodeficiency.
  2. There are two major strains of the virus, HIV-1 and HIV-2, of which HIV-1 causes most disease worldwide. HIV-2 is endemic to West Africa but is spreading.
